Life & Career

Biography

Abraham Benjamin de Villiers was born on February 17, 1984, in Pretoria, South Africa. A prodigious sporting talent, he excelled not only at cricket but also at rugby, tennis, badminton, and golf during his school years at Afrikaanse Hoer Seunskool. He was reportedly offered a junior contract by the Springboks' age-group rugby setup and could have become a professional in multiple sports. However, cricket won out, and he made his international debut for South Africa against England at Port Elizabeth in December 2004, scoring a patient 28 in a role that belied the explosive batting that would later define his career.

De Villiers rapidly evolved from a technically correct orthodox batsman into the most innovative and destructive run-scorer in world cricket. His ability to play 360-degree shots -- including reverse scoops, switch hits, and extraordinary ramps -- earned him the nickname "Mr 360." On January 18, 2015, he smashed the record for the fastest ODI century, reaching three figures in just 31 balls against the West Indies at the Wanderers. In that same innings he also set records for the fastest ODI 50 (16 balls) and fastest ODI 150 (64 balls). In Test cricket, he was equally formidable, scoring 22 centuries including an unbeaten 278 against Pakistan. He averaged over 50 in both formats simultaneously.

De Villiers announced his sudden retirement from international cricket in May 2018, shocking the cricketing world. He continued to play in franchise T20 leagues, particularly for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, where his partnership with Virat Kohli became one of the most celebrated in the tournament's history. He was named ICC ODI Player of the Year three times (2010, 2014, 2015) and is universally regarded as one of the most naturally gifted cricketers ever to play the game. His unique combination of classical technique and audacious innovation redefined what was possible in modern batting.
