Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother, Daljit Bumrah, who worked as a school principal to support the family. Growing up in modest circumstances, Bumrah developed his unusual bowling action largely through self-teaching, watching fast bowlers on television and imitating them on the streets and grounds of Ahmedabad. His unconventional action -- featuring a short, stuttering run-up and a hyperextended delivery arm -- initially drew skepticism from coaches, but its effectiveness was undeniable. He first gained attention in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians, where his ability to bowl lethal yorkers at the death quickly made him one of the most coveted bowlers in the tournament.

Bumrah made his international debut in a T20I against Australia in January 2016 and his Test debut against South Africa in January 2018. His Test career has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has taken over 170 wickets at an average of approximately 20, with devastating performances across the world -- including five-wicket hauls in England, Australia, South Africa, and the West Indies. He became the first Asian bowler to take five-wicket hauls in all three SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries. His ability to swing the ball both ways, generate steep bounce, and bowl precise yorkers makes him arguably the most complete fast bowler in contemporary cricket. He has held the number one position in the ICC Test bowling rankings.

In limited-overs cricket, Bumrah is equally formidable. His death-overs economy rate in T20 cricket is among the lowest in the world, and his ability to execute pinpoint yorkers under maximum pressure has made him invaluable to India and the Mumbai Indians. He has won multiple IPL titles with Mumbai Indians and has been a cornerstone of India's fast bowling attack across all formats. In 2024, he was named the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year. Despite managing back injuries that have intermittently sidelined him, Bumrah's impact on Indian cricket has been transformative, helping shift the narrative from India being a spinning nation to one with genuine world-class pace bowling. He is widely regarded as the best fast bowler India has ever produced.
