Biography

Benjamin Andrew Stokes was born on June 4, 1991, in Christchurch, New Zealand. His father Ged was a rugby league player and coach from Cumbria, England, and the family moved back to England when Ben was 12 years old. Stokes grew up in Cockermouth, Cumbria, before developing his cricket at Durham County Cricket Club. He quickly showed himself to be a ferociously talented all-rounder with a combative temperament, making his ODI debut for England in 2011 and his Test debut in 2013.

Stokes's career has been defined by extraordinary match-winning performances. In 2019, he produced two of the greatest innings in cricket history within the space of a few weeks. First, he scored an unbeaten 84 in the World Cup Final against New Zealand at Lord's, dragging England to a tie and an eventual victory on boundary countback in the most dramatic cricket match ever played. Weeks later, he struck a sensational unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, chasing 362 to win one of the greatest Test matches of all time. These performances earned him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the ICC Cricketer of the Year for 2019.

Appointed England's Test captain in 2022, Stokes brought an ultra-aggressive, positive approach to the team dubbed "Bazball." Under his leadership, England transformed from a struggling Test side into one of the most exciting teams in world cricket, pursuing daring run chases and aggressive declarations. With over 6,000 Test runs and 200+ wickets, Stokes stands as one of cricket's greatest all-rounders and one of the most captivating competitors the game has ever seen.
