Biography
Joseph Edward Root was born on December 30, 1990, in Sheffield, England. He grew up in a cricketing family -- his younger brother Billy Root also plays professional cricket. Joe developed his skills at the Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club and the Yorkshire academy before making his first-class debut for Yorkshire in 2010. He burst onto the international scene in 2012 and quickly showed the technical excellence and composure that would define his career, earning his first Test cap against India in Nagpur in December 2012.
Root's rise through the ranks was swift and assured. By 2015, he was established as one of the best batters in the world and was part of England's 2019 Cricket World Cup-winning squad. He was appointed England Test captain in 2017 and led the team until 2022, during which time he amassed runs at an extraordinary rate. His most prolific year was 2021, when he scored 1,708 Test runs in a calendar year, including six centuries. Root's classical technique, combined with an innovative streak that includes reverse sweeps and ramp shots, makes him one of the most complete batters in the game.
As England's all-time leading Test run-scorer with over 12,500 runs and 35 centuries, Root has surpassed legends such as Sir Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch, and David Gower. He continues to be the cornerstone of England's batting order and is a universally admired figure in world cricket. A member of the "Fab Four" alongside Kohli, Smith, and Williamson, Root's appetite for runs shows no signs of diminishing. He represents England across formats and the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
